The Spirit

The icon of Argentinean sports, Diego Maradona, was chosen as the subject of this piece. Maradona was a rebel, a genius, a politically incorrect figure who was both loved and hated, and a true ambassador of the country. The artwork depicts Maradona in Villa Fiorito, the slum where he was born, during a flood where water had risen to his knees. It shows Maradona holding a sword of justice in one hand and the infamous “hand of God” in the other. The crow represents the fierce spirit that guided him from the mud to the sky.
